Granny SCARE A Thon - Information and Granny Square Pattern Roundup

Don’t be afraid!!!!

I promise Granny Squares aren’t scary!!!

I used to be really intimidated by granny square projects. Making all those little squares seemed like SO much effort and time. But granny squares are actually so simple and fun! They are the perfect small project for WIPping on the go and are great for busting all thsoe scraps in your stash! Depending on the square pattern you use, making granny squares can be incredibly meditative and are an ideal netflix marathon WIP. With simple repetitions and stitches, granny squares are great for beginner crocheters. And the projects you can make with granny squares?? From bags and blanket to cardigans, tank tops, dresses, and pants, there are SO many amazing things you can do with granny squares!!

I’ve decided that to celebrate my love of granny squares (and tackle a rather spectacular project idea I’ve had for a year now), I’m going to host a Granny “Scare” A Thon on Instagram.

What are the rules for this Granny Scare A Thon? Well, you gotta make or design something that involves granny squares! That’s it! You can make multiple small projects like coasters or mittens or you can try tackling a bigger project like a sweater or blanket. Use a classic granny square or try one of the many amazing, embellished granny squares out there. And if you’ve got the design bug, use this as your opportunity to create your own granny square design. Post about your squares and project using the hashtag #GrannyScareAThon on IG and tag me in your posts. I’ll share out some of your posts and reels in my stories and we can cheer each other on as we craft the granny square projects of our dreams.

For my own project, I’ll be designing an EPIC granny square dress using the 2021 October Coco advent from The Little Wolf Knits. I’m envisioning a long train, wide sleeves, a deeeeeeep V neck, and all the bright Dia de Muertos colors. I’ll be posting my progress on IG and may even ask for community advice and votes if/when I get stumped on a design decision. You’ll be able to see my entire design process from start to (hopefully) finish!

The Granny Scare A Thon will start on September 19th and last until October 31st giving us 6 weeks to make our granny squares and assemble them into phenomenal FOs. To help you with choosing your pattern(s) or to inspire you for the Thon, I’ve put together a roundup of 15 of my favorite granny square patterns. All of these designs are available on Ravelry, Etsy, or the designer’s blog/website and all garments are size-inclusive.
